Es el más grande en tamaño de todos los animales que viven a base de sangre. Sin embargo, de las más de 1.000 especies diferentes de murciélagos que existen, solo tres se alimentan de sangre. La mayoría se alimentan de insectos, carroña, frutas o néctar. Respecto a las que se alimentan de sangre existen: el vampiro común (Desmodus rotundus), el vampiro de patas peludas (Diphylla ecaudata) y el vampiro de alas blancas (Diaemus youngi). Las tres especies son originarias de América. Los murciélagos vampiro sólo cazan cuando está completamente oscuro. El vampiro común suele alimentarse de cualquier animal de sangre caliente, sin embargo, las otras dos especies se nutren con la sangre de los seres humanos y las aves. Cuando localiza su presa, el vampiro aterriza en una zona desprovista de pelo y muerden la zona que su sensor de radiación infrarroja les indica. Una vez hecho, no absorben la sangre, sino que la beben a lengüetadas.

Las tres especies son originarias de América. Los murciélagos vampiro sólo cazan cuando está completamente oscuro. El vampiro común suele alimentarse de cualquier animal de sangre caliente, sin embargo, las otras dos especies se nutren con la sangre de los seres humanos y las aves. Cuando localiza su presa, el vampiro aterriza en una zona desprovista de pelo y muerden la zona que su sensor de radiación infrarroja les indica. Una vez hecho, no absorben la sangre, sino que la beben a lengüetadas.

Es el más grande en tamaño de todos los animales que viven a base de sangre. Sin embargo, de las más de 1.000 especies diferentes de murciélagos que existen, solo tres se alimentan de sangre. La mayoría se alimentan de insectos, carroña, frutas o néctar. Respecto a las que se alimentan de sangre existen: el vampiro común (Desmodus rotundus), el vampiro de patas peludas (Diphylla ecaudata) y el vampiro de alas blancas (Diaemus youngi). Las tres especies son originarias de América. Los murciélagos vampiro sólo cazan cuando está completamente oscuro. El vampiro común suele alimentarse de cualquier animal de sangre caliente, sin embargo, las otras dos especies se nutren con la sangre de los seres humanos y las aves. Cuando localiza su presa, el vampiro aterriza en una zona desprovista de pelo y muerden la zona que su sensor de radiación infrarroja les indica. Una vez hecho, no absorben la sangre, sino que la beben a lengüetadas.
